TUFFEX - Expanded Metal Mesh

Expanded metal is an incredibly versatile material with almost unlimited uses. Stronger than wire mesh, cheaper than perforated metal, attractive and lightweight, expanded metal is the answer to numerous engineering and architectural problems.

We stock over 30 sheet sizes and maintain possibly the largest stock holding in the West Midlands and offer great pricing and delivery within hours if required.

Use when strength and free passage of light and air is required without excess weight:

Expanded metal mesh is available in three basic types: Raised, Flattened, Walkway plus Edging Strip for added strength/finish and LUXCLIPS.

Edging Strip

Edging strip is designed to be used to frame sheets of expanded metal but some are also suitable for use with welded mesh. It comes in various gap widths (1.8mm, 3.4mm, 6.5mm and 10.16mm) and generally with the overall widths of 12.7mm, 19.05mm and 31.75mm.

We stock all sizes shown in mild steel but some are available in stainless steel and aluminium. For large quantities other lengths can be made.

Mesh Dimensions

When ordering mesh it is important to understand the different ways that dimensions are measured on raised and flattened mesh.

The diagrams below show you the differences:

TUFFEX Mesh Dimensions

How to specify your sheet size
Longway (LW) is the dimension of the sheet measured in line with the longway of the diamonds, and should always be the first dimension quoted.

Shortway (SW) is the dimension of the sheet measured across the shortway of the diamonds, and should always be the second dimension quoted.

The diagrams below show you the difference:

TUFFEX - Sheet Size

All sheet sizes are nominal and sheets are normally supplied oversize and not sheared to the exact size unless agreed otherwise at the order placement stage. On raised meshes the Longway (LW) and Shortway (SW) dimensions are measured from the centre of each knuckle (joint). On flattened meshes the dimensions are given for the aperture.

Sheet sizes are stated with the Longway of the diamond running along the first dimension. e.g 2440 x 1220mm indicates that the Longway runs down the 2440mm dimension; 1220 x 2440mm indicates that the Longway runs down the 1220mm dimension.

Walkway Support Data

When used as a walkway, expanded metal provides a good, slip resistant floor that is self-cleaning and allows water, snow and dust to drop through. Fit with the flat side of the mesh intersection uppermost and fix with the slope of the strands in one direction only.

The following are the maximum clear spans that will give a deflection of less than 10mm or 1/200th of the span as defined in BS4592 and BS5950 when subject to the uniformly distributed loads shown.

Clear span is the unsupported distance between the supporting steelwork. Allow at least 30mm support on either side. For walkway lengths greater than the short way dimension of the sheet, overlap the panels by at least one diamond and fix with clips or butt weld at every joint.

Removable Panels: Clamp securely to frame using the special clips designed to allow easy fixing and removal.

Finish

Tuffex quality mesh is supplied to internationally accepted standards. Edging Strip: all sizes shown are stocked in mild steel, some are available in stainless steel and aluminium.

Manufacturing Standards

Tuffex is manufactured to BS 405, 1987 from a single sheet of steel with either raised or flattened strands.

All standard stock items are mild steel specially selected for strength and ductility and is lightly oiled during the manufacturing process. This oil is retained to help prevent deterioration during storage and delivery.
