School Refurbishment (2017)
Secondary Steelwork Package including Feature Stair
Location: Eden Girls School, Slough
This was a project to convert the old Blackberry Telecoms HQ into a modern school serving the local Muslim community. The shell of the building was retained while internal modifications were supported with steelworks supplied by Luxtrade. Two major elements provided real engineering challenges.
Firstly we manufactured and installed two 21m lattice beams to support the new gym roof, and secondly we provided a feature stair spanning approximately 12m. In each case we were lifting large sections to height with very limited headroom (50mm in the case of the lattice beams.
With complex projects like this now stable fare for Luxtrade, we were faced with two major problems. The Lattice beam itself required manufacturing to very high precision.
National Structural Steelwork Specification tolerances were unsuitable for this beam and required millimetre perfect measurements at site. Our allowance of 3mm over 21m proved accurate even allowing for temperature expansion.
The craneage limitations of our factory of 20 years at Hilton Rd proved insurmountable and prompted our relocation to our new premises some 9 months later.
The stringers for the feature stair exceeded our factory lifting capacity resulting in additional splicing and hiring in of additional craneage capacity. Both stair flights were manufactured and delivered to site, shifted over a load limited floor and again, in a very complex lift, raised into position.
At Luxtrade all of our products are built to bespoke specification. No project is too large or small. Contact us today and start a conversation about your project.
